Brian, paying for parking fines can already be done online. Look for the "Online Services" button in the upper right corner of the city's home page. I agree that extending this convenience to other payments is a good idea. Note that when someone does pay online using a credit card, the city tacks on an extra $1.80 transaction fee. This seems both petty and punitive. The city should absorb this fee since the alternative is to either mail a cheque or to go to the service counter at City Hall to pay in person. The value of the human labour involved for these latter types of payment would exceed $1.80. Credit card processing, on the other hand, is automatic and would not involve any clerical labour at all. The city SAVES money by encouraging payment online even it were to eat the $1.80 transaction fee. It shouldn't lose $5 while trying to exact $1.80 from its taxpayers.

The city of Waterloo should be working with both the school boards, the region, GRT, and the police to share one hashtag #CityOfWaterloo. Whenever any of these groups needs to tweet about something that happens within the city, then they use #CityOfWaterloo, regardless of who has jurisdiction. So a closure of King St. in Waterloo would use the hashtags of #CityOfWaterloo and #RegionOfWaterloo since the street lies in both jurisdictions and is the responsibility of the region. School closure announcements due to snow would also use #CityOfWaterloo even though the governing agency is the Waterloo Regional (or Catholic) School Board.

Makes a lotta sense. Why isn't this site a part of city.waterloo.on.ca? I think that the city continues to a poor job of connecting with people.

Saj, do you work for the city? If so, you might know that this is already an online service. On the city's home page, look for "Online Services" in the upper right corner of the page. Yeah, I know, the arrangement of menus, navigation buttons, and menu bars are a mess. But it's there. Upper right corner. The service does exactly what you are asking for: register for an exemption online.

I like the idea of some type of a home page that is multilingual; it would show to the world the rich diversity of our community and it would welcome those in our midst who arrive from cultures outside of Canada. That said, I can't see how the city has the resources or the time to translate the thousands of web pages into a multiplicity of languages. If this were the Martimes, where both English and French, are prevalent, it would make sense. If this were Miami, then it would make sense to produce pages in both English and Spanish. In this region, it makes less sense since there is no a second language that is so dominant. Don't underestimate the costs of translating and then proofing thousands of pages, some of which change regularly. However, a multilingual welcome page is a great idea.

Kathy, can't this already be done just by setting your browser to use a larger font? I do know that some websites fail badly when this is done since very large fonts work against other design elements (graphics, layout, etc). However, for modest bumps in font size, there shouldn't be a problem. Or is there a different reason for asking for larger print?
