  1. Accident Waiting to Happen: 1000s of people J-walk everyday at University Ave & Lester

A residential street, called "Lester Street" is walkable distance from the University of Waterloo. Now, 4 apartment building are on this residential street. This means 1000s of students are living on this tiny street. Everyday, all of us cross the main road at "University Ave & Lester St" numerous times. Since there is no traffic light, we find ourselves J-walking and running across the busy street. We hear cars honking sometimes. In rush hour, we just wait along the sidewalk, and the number of students waiting goes up 5 to 25 in minutes. We miss buses waiting like that, and…

  2. enact a more efficient snow removal system for roads and sidewalks

I am a student living near the University of Waterloo, having lived in Toronto and Brampton, and been quite frequently to other cities in the GTA such as Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Oakville and Burlington, and I must say, the snow removal services in Waterloo are HORRIBLE.

I have witnessed many main roads being uncleaned and un-salted 6-8 hours after the last snowfall. The sidewalks close to the University area take DAYS to shovel. I have already witnessed 2-3 falls personally just in the first week of school in 2015.

My street, Lester Street (close to UW), sometimes takes a WEEK…

You (the city) may want to think a bit about the messages you're sending when you ticket people who leave their cars overnight outside drinking establishments: "Drive home drunk so you won't get a ticket!" "Don't visit our city's businesses!"

If I'm responsible enough to take a taxi home after having a couple of drinks, I shouldn't be penalized for it, particularly if it's in a relatively empty lot on a Saturday night.

  4. Give newcomers a chance to learn about the by-laws before hitting them with fines.

I returned from China Canada to live in Waterloo on the 6th of August. A couple of days later my wife and I received parking tickets for leaving our vehicles on the road outside our driveway overnight. We had no idea that such a by-law existed. After visiting the City, I was told that, despite the fact there are no signs on our street, there are signs posted at key entry points to the city. Unfortunately, I entered the city at night after arriving on an overnight flight from China and was not alert enough to notice these signs. Apparently…

  5. Grind up waste prior to putting into the landfill

Is there some sort of equipment that could grind up waste prior to placing it into the landfill in order to extend the life of the landfill?

  6. Please create a Waterloo 311

Toronto has an awesome service: a website + hotline where you can submit questions and non-emergency service requests. Such as reporting graffiti, fallen trees, broken roads and more.

    Toronto 311: http://www1.toronto.ca/wps/portal/contentonly?vgnextoid=86d3ba2ae8b1e310VgnVCM10000071d60f89RCRD

There's a large dead rat in uptown that I walk by every day and I have no idea who to report it to for cleanup.

  7. maintain the lawns and greenspace at the John Harper Branch of the Library

Have you seen it? Have you seen the plethora of allergy-inducing weeds and other noxious plants that surround the library? Please clean it up.

  8. Create one website.

How do people even know how to get to waterloo.uservoice.com? How would the public learn that there are suggestions here? Add to this the confusion of citywaterlooblog.com versus city.waterloo.on.ca. Use consistent branding and site names. At least three different sites! where there should be just one.

  9. Encourage and post all feedback even if it might be critical of city services

Democracy supports uncensored debate among its members. This site should not filter or moderate submissions from its citizens even if they are critical of city services or staff. How else can the city improve unless it removes its hands from its ears. How else can we admit to what needs improvement and seek suggestions and alternatives from an educated and involved public? Don't let this site become just a PR vehicle. If that is all that it is, there will be no compelling reason to come back to it.

  10. have a website and community portal accessible to everyone

I suggest have a website and social network accessible and user friendly to everyone similar to my hometown of Chatham Kent. which can be found at www.chatham-kent.ca and the social network at http://inck.ca/. I also encourage you to consider rebranding. Credibility online is very important. Your website, blog, and if you choose to do a social network, it all needs to be on one site.

  11. Start up a City newsletter

Set up a city newsletter that can be distributed at city facilities and mailed out to homes and businesses. It would include city news and information for residents.

Would like the ability to pay for property tax, fines (eg. parking tickets) online. But also the ability to pay for courses/events such as swimming lessons.
